Which
bird flu masks protect from the H5N1 or bird flu avian flu virus?
These questions are being asked a lot. Here is some information to clarify:
There are two different reasons to wear bird flu face masks, requiring
two different types of face masks.
The first reason is for actively presenting
patients to help prevent spread of the bird flu virus. The second reason
is to help prevent catching the Avian virus.
The WHO (World Health Organization) says;
Patients
should wear a surgical mask to minimize dispersal of droplets. All visitors
and staff should wear a N95 respirator on entering the room
of a patient with confirmed or suspected Avian H5N1 virus. Surgical masks are a less
effective alternative to N95 bird flu respirator mask.
The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends using a fit-tested
respirator, at least as protective as a National Institute of Occupational
Safety and Health (NIOSH)-approved N-95 filtering face-piece (i.e.,
disposable) respirator, when entering the room.
The following table lists 3M respirators that satisfy the CDC and WHO
recommendations of minimum N95 for HCWs. The would be the best mask to use for
the bird flu.
