Avian Influenza Outbreaks
Outbreaks of highly pathogenic
avian bird flu -
influenza A (H5N1), associated with illness and death in humans
occurred in Asia in late 2003 and 2004.
In the United States, there were Avian flu outbreaks among poultry during 2003 and
2004, but no related illness in humans.
However, 1 human infection with
influenza H7N2 virus of unknown origin was documented in the United
States in November 2003.
In British Columbia, Canada, an
H7N3 avian flu outbreak among poultry in 2004 was associated with human illness.

As of January 9, 2006, World Health Organization has
reported human cases of avian
influenza A (H5N1) in the following
countries:
A January 9, 2006, WHO Situation
Report describes detection of the H5
subtype of avian influenza virus in
samples from an additional 10 people
in Turkey. These samples are
undergoing further analysis to
determine whether they contain the
H5N1 strain.

Details
Common in birds, avian influenza usually does not spread
to people, but instances of human bird flu infections have been reported
since 1997 and are on the increase.
